About Kitzbühel
Kitzbühel was a silver and copper town long before it was a ski town, and the money from the mines is still standing: two parallel streets, the Vorderstadt and the Hinterstadt, lined with tall burgher houses painted apricot, green, ochre and dusty pink, closed at one end by the Jochberger gate arch and overlooked by the two churches on their terrace. It is a small old town — you can walk the whole of it in fifteen minutes — and it holds together as a backdrop in a way few alpine resorts do. Above it on the west side is the Hahnenkamm, a gondola ride of eight minutes from the edge of the centre, and the Streif that runs down it is the most feared downhill course in ski racing; the race weekend in the second half of January fills the whole valley, and for the rest of the year the summit is a quiet grass terrace with the Wilder Kaiser's limestone wall on the northern horizon. Facing it across the town, the Kitzbüheler Horn rises to 1,996 metres, with an alpine flower garden on its southwestern flank that is free to walk into and in bloom from roughly late May to early September.
