The Vorderstadt and Hinterstadt are the signature frame — tall painted burgher houses, the Jochberger gate arch and the two church towers on their terrace above. The Hahnenkamm summit, eight gondola minutes from the centre, gives the Wilder Kaiser across the valley and the top of the Streif. The Schwarzsee mirrors the Kitzbüheler Horn at the end of the day, and the Horn's alpine flower garden is in bloom through the summer.

The old town streets run north to south, so they hold soft light most of the day and are best before ten, when the shops are still shuttered and the street is empty. The Schwarzsee is an evening lake, with the Horn lit across the water. Both run two seasons rather than one long year. Once you book, you and your photographer agree everything privately by chat: the exact spot, the time, what you will both be wearing, and a small signal for the moment before you kneel. On the day the photographer arrives early and behaves like any other visitor photographing the view, while actually tracking you. The proposal itself is shot from a distance with a long lens, and only afterwards does the photographer step forward and continue with a short celebratory session — the ring, the phone calls home, the toast. Almost never, and Austria helps. At the Gloriette, on the Hallstatt shore or on any lake promenade half the people present already have a camera up, so one more photographer is invisible. Your photographer scouts the spot beforehand, chooses a natural place to stand, and avoids eye contact with you until the ring is out. If you are especially worried, pick a busier viewpoint rather than an empty one — a lone photographer on a deserted jetty is more noticeable than one in a crowd — or ask for a longer lens and more distance. Both are normal requests and your photographer will advise honestly on which suits the location you have chosen.
