The Rosshütte and the Wetterstein view

The Standseilbahn Rosshütte leaves from a station on the eastern edge of Seefeld and climbs to about 1,750 metres in under ten minutes. That is the whole appeal: the highest, widest view on the plateau, reachable in shoes, with no walking required to reach a terrace, a restaurant and an open horizon.

What you get up there is not a summit but a shoulder — open ground, low pine and grass, with the Wetterstein massif and the Hohe Munde standing right across the valley to the south-west and the Karwendel behind you. A subject has a genuine mountain background five minutes from the top station, which is unusual; most alpine viewpoints need half an hour of walking before the buildings drop out of frame.

The terrace faces roughly south and west and holds direct light well into the evening, long after the plateau below has cooled. Mornings are the clearest air and the emptiest cabins.

In summer this is a hiking base with cattle on the slopes and two further lifts running higher, to the Seefelder Joch and the Härmelekopf. From December it is a ski area, with the same terrace above a snowfield. The funicular runs in two seasons with a break between them and its timetable shifts each year — check the operating dates before planning a session around the ride.
