Get directionsA narrow branch leaves the main road just above the Fuscher Törl and climbs in a couple of steep hairpins to the Edelweißspitze, the highest point the Grossglockner road reaches at 2,571 metres. The last section is cobbled rather than asphalted, deliberately, and it is one of the details that dates the road to the 1930s.
The top is a small parking area and a round stone viewing tower on a bare rocky summit. Walk up the tower steps and the view is genuinely 360 degrees: the Hohe Tauern in every direction, the road itself winding below, and on a clear day something like thirty peaks over three thousand metres.
There is very little shelter and very little room — this is a summit, not a terrace. Wind is the constant here, the light is hard at midday and best in the first and last hours, and cloud arrives fast. The bare rock and the tower give a strong graphic frame in flat light too.
The spur is part of the toll road and shares its season, roughly May to October, closing earlier than the main road when snow arrives. The surface is uneven and the hairpins are tight; large vehicles are usually not permitted, so check the restrictions if you are not in a car.
Best time to shoot
First or last light for soft light on bare rock; avoid midday, when the summit is flat and glaring

It is a summit, not a viewpoint terrace — expect wind, cold and little room, and hold on to anything light. The spur is cobbled with tight hairpins and closes earlier than the main road, so check restrictions and conditions.
