The Oberstadt and the Martinsturm

The Oberstadt is what Bregenz was before the lake shore was built: a small walled town on the hill, entered through a gate, with two cobbled streets, a handful of painted houses and almost no traffic. It takes ten minutes to walk up from the promenade and the change is complete — from open water and modern glass to enclosed stone in a couple of hundred metres.

The landmark is the Martinsturm, a broad square tower crowned in 1601 with a wooden onion dome, said to be the oldest and largest of its kind in central Europe. It sits at a corner where the lanes narrow, and the small square in front of it is the natural place to work; from the wall above there are gaps that look down over the roofs to the lake.

The streets are narrow and run roughly east–west, so direct sun reaches the cobbles only around the middle of the day. The rest of the time this is soft, reflected light between painted façades, which suits portraits far better than the hard contrast of noon. Early morning is empty.

Unlike the promenade, the Oberstadt barely changes with the season — the same stone, the same quiet, a few window boxes in summer and lit windows in December. It is the reliable option when the lake is grey or the shore is full, and the two are close enough that a single session can take in both.
