Weeks 28 to 34 are the sweet spot: the bump is unmistakably there, energy is usually still good, and travel is comfortable — which matters if the session involves a train to the Wachau or a drive into Tyrol. If you are coming to Austria for a babymoon, plan the shoot for the first days of the trip so there is room to move it. Seasonally the country is generous: April to June and September to October give warm light without midsummer heat, and winter gives soft flat light with the option of snow. For a summer session your photographer will book the early morning or the last hour of daylight and keep shade and a bench close.

Long flowing dresses are the classic for a reason: they move in the wind off a lake, flatter the bump and glow against pale stone and green meadows. Solid colours work best — cream, terracotta, dusty blue, forest green. Fitted knits photograph beautifully too if that is more your style. Bring two options, one flowing and one fitted, and flat shoes: Salzburg and Hallstatt are cobbled, and a Vienna garden path is gravel. In winter, a long coat that opens over the bump plus a warm layer underneath solves everything. Some photographers keep a small collection of client dresses in maternity cuts or can point you to local rental; ask when you book. Above all, wear what makes you feel beautiful — that photographs more than the fabric does.

Please bring them — the best maternity galleries are family stories rather than solo portraits. A session usually flows through the combinations by itself: portraits of you and the bump, quiet frames with your partner, siblings talking to the belly (reliably the most loved picture in the gallery), and a few minutes reserved for you alone in the best light. Photographers used to small children take the family frames early, while patience is fresh, and let the little ones play at the edge of the scene in between — a Vienna park or the Achensee shore gives them plenty to do. Including your own family costs nothing extra in a standard session; just mention ages when you book so the location and pace suit everyone.
