Photographers in St. Wolfgang & the Wolfgangsee

St. Wolfgang sits on the north shore of the Wolfgangsee with its back to the Schafberg, and the view everyone comes for is from the water: the pilgrimage church's white tower, the painted hotel fronts stepping down to the boats, and the green Falkenstein slope behind. The lake steamers run roughly May to October and the crossing from Strobl or St. Gilgen gives you that frame from the deck; from land, the pier by the Weißes Rössl and the Ochsenkreuz path east of the village both hold it. The church itself is the reason the village exists — a Gothic pilgrimage church with Michael Pacher's carved altar inside; the exterior, the arcaded lane beside it and the terrace over the water are the parts a shoot uses, and the interior has its own photography rules, so check them. The Schafbergbahn, a cog railway running since 1893, climbs from the village to 1,732 metres in about 35 minutes. It runs roughly from May to late October, weather permitting, and the summit gives the Wolfgangsee, the Mondsee and the Attersee in one turn — the single biggest picture in the region. Book ahead in July and August and take the first train for clear air. Across the water, St. Gilgen is fifteen minutes by boat and belongs to Salzburg rather than Upper Austria: a smaller square, Mozart's mother's house, and the Zwölferhorn cable car above it. Summer is long-evening light on the promenade and swimmers in a lake that reaches 24 °C. Winter empties the village, closes the rack railway and the boats, and turns the lakefront into a quiet, misty frame with an Advent market on the shore in December.
