About Neusiedler See
The Neusiedler See is unlike anywhere else in Austria: a steppe lake on the edge of the Hungarian plain, thirty-six kilometres long, almost nowhere more than a metre and a half deep, with no natural outflow and a reed belt kilometres wide around most of its shore. There is no mountain anywhere in the frame — the light comes in flat, the horizon is a single line, and on a still evening the water goes to glass in a way alpine lakes never do. Rust, on the western shore, is the picture-book town: a protected old quarter of painted burgher houses and arcaded courtyards around Rathausplatz, the fortified Fischerkirche, white storks nesting on the chimneys from spring into late summer, and a causeway a kilometre and a half long through the reeds to the Seebad and its jetties. Mörbisch, the last village before Hungary, has its own causeway out to a stage standing in the water, where the operetta festival plays in July and August. On the eastern shore Podersdorf is the one village with open water and no reed at all, and its small red-and-white lighthouse at the end of the mole is the most photographed object on the lake. Behind it lies the Seewinkel, a flat puszta of salt ground and shallow soda pans — the Lange Lacke, the Zicksee — inside a national park shared with Hungary, where the horizon is grazing cattle and thousands of migrating birds. Summer is hot, windy and full of sails; September and October are the best weeks, warm and empty, with the vintage on in the villages; and in a hard winter the whole lake freezes and people skate and ice-sail across it.

Best time: The hour after sunrise or before sunset, when the pans mirror the sky; April to June and September to October for birds
Use the reed road out to the lake as a location in its own right. Stay on the marked paths — the pans are protected and much of the ground is soft — and check what the national park currently allows.
Rust's old town and its stork nests
Austria's smallest chartered town — painted houses and arcaded courtyards around one square, with white storks nesting on the chimneys.
Best time: The first and last hour of the day on the squares; the courtyards work in any light; spring to late summer for the storks
Look up — the nests are the picture and they need a wider lens than the street does. Walk into the arcaded courtyards instead of shooting façades from the square; the light in there is the reason to come.
The Podersdorf lighthouse
A small red-and-white tower on a mole at the only village on the lake with no reed belt — open water in every direction.
Best time: Sunset over the water, or the half-hour after it; sunrise for an empty pier
Walk to the very end of the mole and shoot back — the tower plus the line of the pier beats the tower alone. In summer come at first light or after seven; the beach is full in between.
